this now serves as a pleasant area for your welcome drinks. the cow shed that was on the open side of the courtyard has long since disappeared; its approximate position is marked out by the flower border. over the years the barns have become increasingly redundant and virtually impossible to use owing to mechanisation of the farming industry. our aim was to rejuvenate them and restore them to their former glory. with the aid of rdpe funding we started the renovation in february 2010 and completed it, on schedule, at the end of august. we felt it was important to use local materials in the modernisation, especially the wood. much of it comes from the barn itself or other parts of the farm buildings and surrounding area. a friend with a mobile sawmill cut it into require lengths, and local craftsmen, with great skill and understanding of the needs of the barn, created the stairs, the bar and many other features. a 17th century window frame which was being used as a doorway has been restored to its original use and now graces the far wall of the main barn. it makes a lovely focal point. we are very proud of what we have achieved. the buildings have sat idle for a long time and have therefore been carbon neutral. we are doing our utmost to maintain that neutrality with the installation of pv cells to create electricity and by powering the underfloor heating with a woodchip/grain/waste boiler contact us ian and yta batchelor tel. 01884 32107 the corn barn sutton barton cullompton devon ex15 1nf email.
